As of the census of 2000, there were 299,896 people, 116,230 households, and 76,297 families residing within the MSA. The racial makeup of the MSA was 91.85% White, 4.62% African American, 0.23% Native American, 1.00% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.91% from other races, and 1.38% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.71% of the population.
The median income for a household in the MSA was $34,417, and the median income for a family was $42,956. Males had a median income of $31,051 versus $22,907 for females. The per capita income for the MSA was $17,329.
